>> Item Drop Down Menu > Create New Split Items

Tracker software's ability to split an item is yet another feature that sets it apart from the rest. In direct response to client need, Tracker developed a feature that would create a new item based on the split of the original item. Here's one example of how this works: A drug is received by a crime lab and entered into the system. A sample needs to be split from the original for testing. Since the new item and the original may be in different locations, it's necessary to track both.

There are several ways to split an item:

  1. From the items drop down menu click the 'Split Item' option.
  2. Update any item and click the split button at the bottom of the page.

After selecting the split option, answer the questions that follow about the split.

How many items are you splitting this item into?: Enter the total number of additional items that are being created by this split.

Are these items linked to the original item?: Select the option that applies. If the split item will always move with the original item, then select yes. If there is a possibility that this split item will move independently of the original, then select no.

Example: Some of our customers track computer media. That computer media will often be put on a large hard drive that contains multiple items. Whenever that hard drive moves, all items will also move. This is an example where sub items are always located with the main item.

After completing the process of splitting an item, the split items will appear as shown in this screen shot. Item’s #23 and #24 are split from item #22. The S:22 indicates that this is a split item from item 22.

Updates

6/13/2008 All new splits will automatically be placed in the same location as the parent item. Prior to the update, an item was placed in temporary holding are by default. Since we recognize most users house the item with the parent, we changed the default to reflect this.
