What is a barcode
Technical Answer: A barcode (also bar code) is an optical machine-readable representation of data. In English: Identification number for a unique item translated by a computer reader (scanner).
Why? We use bar codes because it allows you to more quickly and correctly process items that are in the system. Instead of manually typing every item number in the system when you want to perform a transactions you simply scan the bar code on the item and process the transaction.
When you see a label on a item you might see something like 5000-1 under the bar code. This number (5000-1) represents the unique ID # for that item according to the software. In all reality you could type that number in the system and check that item in or out. However, if you were checking out 50 items at once it would get quite daunting typing in a variation of that number 50 items. Scanning is a much quicker process.
Label Customization
Labels are completely customizable. The only necessary piece of information on the label is the bar code. Every other piece of information is optional. If you need to change your label format just email support@trackerproducts.com.
1D Example
This image is an example of our standard 4x3 label. You will notice a 1D bar code with other information about the item.
2D Example
Tracker now offers 2D bar code printing. 2D bar codes allow a lot more information to be placed in the bar code ID IF this is a necessary function. If you choose to have 2D bar code printing you need to make sure that your scanners are 2D readers.
